Open Metalcast: Hiatus Announcement

Sep 05 2015

Hey all,

After some deliberation I'm putting the show on temporary hiatus. Reason being life is getting in the way of making the show you deserve to hear.

We've had a good five year run and I fully intend to bring you many many more years of the best in Creative Commons Music. But now is not that time, and the show will suffer in the interim.

That doesn't mean we won't have some special episodes when the mood arises; far from it. But the regular every-other-week transmissions are not happening until further notice.

Nobody is more bummed about this than I am, and I'm looking forward to when I'm able to share music with you. That's important to me, but other things need to take precedence.

Take care and stay metal!

Open Metalcast Episode #123: Five Years Young

Aug 18 2015

Open Metalcast was released five years ago on August 17th, 2010 and we thought it would be a great idea to do something special for you our faithful listeners and aficionados of Creative Commons Metal Music. So we got thinking: what could we do to show you how much we love you, the audience, and do something special to celebrate this momentous occasion. Five hours of music? A track from all of the bands we've played on this show? Severed Fifth's Jono Bacon parachuting into each and every one of your homes? While we chucked around these amazing (and somewhat scary) ideas we decided to do the one thing that keeps you coming back for mote: keep bringing you great Creative Commons licensed metal music. We've got tracks from Kekal, Panchita la Pistolera, A Grave On Mars, Death of a Poet, Othismos
Another Destiny Project, Throne of Malediction, Let It Flow, Did You Just Hex Me?, Betrayal, and BlackStar. So rather than serve us restraining orders or testing your intestinal fortitude we'll serve up 50 minutes of crushing metal to tantalize and appease your craving for Creative Commons Licensed Metal Music. Here's to five years and many more to come!

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or make a five-years-running podcast featuring them. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Open Metalcast Episode #122: Don't know when to stop

Aug 04 2015

Ever have one of those days where you just want to keep the music going and don't want it to stop? That's what happened with this episode. It's understandable when you have such great bands as deafheaven, Eschatos, Seal Of Beleth, Beastmaker, Fodastic Brenfers, KDC, Rebel Wizard, Envig, Azgard, and Vinnum Sabbathi in your playlist. Heck, you just forget to stop the music and announce all of the great songs until the very end of the episode. Well, maybe you might. Not that I'm speaking from experience here, but sometimes the music just flows so perfectly you don't want it to stop and you can't figure out where to stop. So sit back and enjoy the episode and relax: I couldn't figure out where to stop either.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or package their track with nine other songs. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Also check out the other great podcasts at Metal Injection, and be sure to listen to all of the great shows (including Open Metalcast) streaming 24/7 at Metalinjection.FM.

Open Metalcast Episode #121: Shuffle mode

Jul 20 2015

Ever have one of those days where you just decide to put your entire library on shuffle and see what happens? That's what happened with this episode. I narrowed down the library to just the Creative Commons Metal Music, turned on shuffle and hit "play". What you're hearing is a (mostly) shuffled version of what is in the Open Metalcast archives. This episode has a mix of different artists, featuring Colosso, Aborym, Exiled From Eden, Trocotombix, Black Autumn, Pr4nA, The Foetal Mind, Frozen Dust, Petrychor, Concatenate, Omainen, and Thou. Some of these haven't been on the show in a while and others are more recent. So sit back and let the realm of randomness take you on an hour-long journey of Creative Commons Metal Music.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or buy their cat pet food. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Open Metalcast Special Episode: Club Metal #15

Jul 13 2015

Have taken a bulk carrier in stasis to avoid detection enroute to Neptune. This is our last transmission until we arrive. Unsure what we will find but hoping to blend in with some Extropian or Scum collectives until this all blows over. Wish us well.

Stasis disturbed. Link damaged. Backup engaged. Transmitting... Transmitting... Transmitting...

Open Metalcast Episode #120: Live until 120

Jul 07 2015

Browsing through Wikipedia for subjects for titles for the show I stumbled upon something I didn't know (isn't that always the case with Wikipedia?) Apparently Moses lived to be 120 years old. So the way to wish someone long life would be "Live until 120" Which is apropos for the 120th episode of our long-running podcast bringing you the finest in Creative Commons metal music (with no end in sight, knock on IKEA desk). This episode brings us the other half of the HELA / LODO split with a track from LODO, as well as tracks from Humanity Defiled, Unholy Quest, Немiга, Grimalkin, Extincion, Soundcrafters, and Sallow. Just remember to listen at respectable volumes so when you turn 120 you can still listen to this great music.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or bring them air conditioning. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Open Metalcast Episode #119: Works of Fire

Jun 22 2015

Tonight was the Windsor–Detroit International Freedom Festival, AKA "The Fireworks". Unfortunately we're also getting some bad weather in this area so they did the fireworks earlier than normal. What does that have to do with this show? Not a damn thing. But what this show does have is nine spectacular songs hidden inside it's encoded bits, including tracks from Ósserp, TEETHING, HOT SKULL, Black Autumn, Rain On Their Parade, Thicket, ROSY FINCH, and B.I.T.E. So if you see flashes before your eyes and hear cracking noises it's probably not the fireworks but the sound of your head banging along with these tracks. And now you know.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or set off fireworks around their trailer. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Open Metalcast Episode #118: 15 minutes or more of fame

Jun 08 2015

This week I'll be seeing Rush in concert for their 40th anniversary tour. One of the reasons Rush is one of my favorite bands is they bucked the trends. On the album 2112 they released the now legendary concept track "2112" which clocked in at over 20 minutes. This was despite their label stating they didn't want any more concept songs. Despite this the album is now regarded as a cultural treaure in Canada and the band is still going strong 40 years later. So much for listening to the conventional wisdom.

All of the tracks in this episode are over 15 minutes in length as a tribute to all of the bands that buck the trends, ignore conventional wisdom, and play the music they want to play. This episode features tracks from Cementerio, Doodsangst, NUTRITION, Schattenbrandung, Deep Space Destructors, and Psygnosis.

So poke a finger in the eye of the collectivist mentality and treat yourself over an hour and a half of the best Creative Commons music the net has to offer.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, or see them in concert. What a concept! Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Open Metalcast Episode #117: Technical Difficulties Be Damned

May 26 2015

Ah the joys of computers. Can't really do a show without one but damned if this computer wasn't being a bit of a pain in the ass by filling up the root partition (and of course not telling me until it completely shit the bed in the process). But with things mostly back to normal we can talk about the amazing episode we have lined up for your ears. We have new tracks from Shooter, Vemm, and Bolesno Grinje, Lux, Evacuate The City, Afterwind, and Alturuk, as well as brand new material from Galactic Pegasus (which was sent to me by a fan of the show through Bandcamp. Thank you so much!). So while computers can be a pain to work with they rare one of the best ways to listen to this show. So fire up your favorite podcatcher and listen to the best Creative Commons Music the net has to offer.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or send their msuic to your favorite podcast. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!

Open Metalcast Episode #116: Larks Returning

May 12 2015

Some sad news to report with this episode. Apparently the album "Larks" is the last "Returning We Hear the Larks" album for the foreseeable future. But "Larks" is an excellent album comprising of re-recorded versions of popular songs spanning the career of Returning We Hear the Larks. Hopefully it won't be the last we hear of this amazing band. And while we end this episode on a bit of a downer we have 45 minutes of ear-punishing Creative Commons Metal starting with a brutal track from Austin Deathrip, Alexander Oden, Manakel, Polygons, Fallen to Flux, and TORT. Add to that a brand new EP from Deep Space Destructors and you have a broad swath of metal music to check out and support.

Please support the bands in this show! Buy a T-Shirt, buy an album, head to the shows, or buy their cross-stitch patterns on Etsy. Whatever you can do to help these bands keep making music, please do it!
